Fuel Conservation
is Always Helpful:
Set your thermostat back, or obtain an automatic
clock thermostat. Every degree lower at night or
when you are away can add up to savings over the
course of a winter. A programmable thermostat
will allow you to set it and forget it. A
reminder: Always set your thermostat at a
reasonable comfort level during winter to ensure
that your pipes do not freeze. And, if you set
your thermostat back manually, don’t turn it so
far back that you’ll need to consume extra
energy to get your heat back up in the morning.
Don’t Lose Heat.
Close your fireplace damper when not in use. Do
not run exhaust fans any longer than needed.
Check to ensure your home exterior is properly
caulked around windows, doors and fireplaces. Be
sure you have a adequate insulation in your
attic. Install energy efficient windows to keep
heat in during the winterand out in the summer.
Check Air Flow In Your House.
Heated air needs to be able to circulate. Be
sure all duct work, baseboard and radiators are
clean and unobstructed. Vacuum your baseboard
fins and make sure carpeting does not block air
flow underneath. Be sure your baseboards and
radiators are not blocked by furniture or drapes
which can trap heat.
Consider A Heating Upgrade.
If your equipment is old, you may want to
consider upgrading to a new, clean burning, and
energy efficient system. New equipment can
reduce oil consumption by as much as 30%, a
payback on your investment that can beat the
return from any bank — and many other
investments. You’ll also enjoy the extra
dividends of plentiful hot water, reliable
warmth and increased home value.
